BF-2185 - Raw Ceramic Funnel Interior Wall Light

The Domus BF-2185 is a raw ceramic funnel uplight — 250 × 300 mm, projecting 120 mm, taking one G9 lamp to 40 W. Made in Italy.

⚠ It takes a 40 W G9, not a 60 W one

Our record listed 60 W. The datasheet says 40 W maximum, and in a closed ceramic funnel that ceiling exists for a reason — the enclosure holds heat.

• Fit a G9 LED, not a halogen. A 3–4 W G9 LED gives roughly 350–450 lm, which is right for a wall uplight, and runs far cooler than the halogen this fitting was originally designed around.
• Warm 2700–3000 K. Ceramic and plaster are warm surfaces; a cool lamp makes them look grey.
• ⚠ Check the lamp is rated for enclosed fixtures. G9 LEDs are small and many are not.
• The lamp is not supplied.

What a funnel uplight does

All the light goes upward and outward against the wall, so:

• The wall becomes the light source — a broad soft wash spreading up to the ceiling, with no visible lamp and no glare at eye level.
• It raises a ceiling visually, which is why uplights work in stairwells, hallways and rooms that feel low.
• ⚠ It gives almost nothing downward. This is atmosphere and architecture, not task light — you cannot read by it.
• ⚠ The wall above it must be worth lighting. A grazing uplight shows every bump, patch and roller mark in the plaster above it. On a poor wall it is unforgiving.

Placing them

• Around 1.8–2 m from the floor is the usual height — above eye level, with enough wall left above for the wash to develop.
• In a rhythm along a hallway or a stairwell, evenly spaced. A single uplight on a long wall reads as an accident.
• ⚠ Keep at least 300 mm of clear wall above the fitting, and check nothing — a cornice, a beam, a picture rail — cuts the wash off.

Where it works

• Hallways, stairwells and entries — in a rhythm, not singly.
• Rooms that feel low, where lifting the ceiling visually helps.
• Wherever you want the fitting to vanish — paint it wall colour.
• ⚠ Not a reading or task light; it throws almost nothing downward.
• ⚠ Only over a wall whose finish will bear grazing light.

250 mm wide, 300 mm high, 120 mm projection, in raw ceramic, made in Italy. ✅ Paintable with any water-based paint.
